Researchers target glucose as latest strategy to fight cancer mesothelioma and lung cancer

Agios pharmaceuticals is one of the first companies to pursue cancer metabolism.  The company received only $488,000 from qualifying therapeutic discovery support project (QTDP) program, the Agios efforts to the development of novel cancer therapies metabolism. (These grants are distributed as part of patient safety and affordable care Act 2010.)


The interest in this research approach was partly fuelled by the recent discovery of the interplay between cancer and diabetes.  The diabetic medication metformin has recently found was the growth of cancer cells to slow lung, mesothelioma and growth and can suppress.


Cornerstone of pharmaceuticals, Inc., awarded a grant from the QTDP program is the use means, to develop medicines, the focus on the different metabolism of cancer cells.  Cornerstone explains the cancer metabolism process, say "so, as the body needs to survive nutrients, cancer cells of certain nutrients, to make energy and increase depend."


Both companies agree that cancer cell metabolism is an exciting and promising area for the development of drugs for the treatment of cancer.  Cornerstone says that although it is known close to 100 years, cancer cells have a unique metabolism, "recently, it has a wide and this unique metabolic difference significant renewal of scientific interest focused on research to facilitate the discovery and development of breakthrough treatments."


Chief Executive of Agios pharmaceuticals, David Schenkein, adds that in research "Nutrient supply and deprivation is the next big wave always potential."
